The Irony That Is Plastic

April 30, 2008
1 Comment

Many people I know claim to have never met a plastic that they like or trust. Anti-plastic Web sites are beginning to appear where people share alternatives to plastic, especially the plastics that hold our food. (Two of my favorites are cynematic and fakeplasticfish and one that has been around a while mindfully.org.
Here we [...]

On the Wings of Mindfulness

Amid the torture, the wars, the poverty, the pollution and degradation of the environment, amid the growing storm of intolerance and the dumbing down of the general population, I find myself deeply frustrated and practically helpless at making any significant change.
I watch. I whine. I grieve. But there is very little I can effectually do.
We [...]

Global Warming and My Winter Garden

February 9, 2008
No Comments

This has been a warm winter in north central Florida. Too warm for the Brassicaceae family, whose members comprise some of our typical winter crops: broccoli, cabbage, kale, mustard, and collards. The broccoli has produced huge leaves and tiny buds. The cabbage has been struggling in the heat and the dampness. The kale has succumbed [...]

Quotable

“We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow. ”

Worth Watching

  • Stranger than Fiction

    Stranger than Fiction

Despite its slow start, “Stranger than Fiction,” is one of those movies you will think about for a long time after it is over. Meaningful and insightful, yet laughing-out-loud funny, the acting, direction, and cinematography are refreshingly intelligent and polished. Will Ferrell is perfect; Emma Thompson is endearing; and Dustin Hoffman–well, brilliant as usual.

  • In the Valley of Elah

    In the Valley of Elah

Superb movie. Distressing but timely and meaningful. Every aspect of this film is noteworthy from the acting by the major and minor characters to the directions, filming, editing, and scripting. What makes its impact even stronger is knowing it is based on a true story. Tommy Lee Jones at his best.

  • Babel

    Babel

A surprising small part for big actor Brad Pitt, and a fine collaboration by all characters to make a haunting, suspenseful film that moves at a rapid pace as it unfolds the connections of three diverse stories in an unexpected way. A disturbing but important perspective of the global community that we ignore but desperately need to understand.
